Élisabeth Joulia was born in Riom, France in 1925.  She studied fine art in Clermont-Ferrand and Paris, and also in Bourges, where she met ceramicist Jean Lerat.  In 1949 she moved to La Borne, where she lived and worked until her death in 2003.
