Daisuke Iguchi
b. 1975
Daisuke Iguchi was born in 1975 in Tochigi, Japan, where he currently lives and works. He graduated from the Tohoku University of Art and Design in 1998. The following year, he studied under Masayuki Uraguchi at the Industrial Technology Center of the Tochigi Prefecture. He built a kiln in Moka, Tochigi in 2004.
Iguchi’s work reflects the concept of Sabi, an admiration of that which is old and faded. He hand builds his vessels, which are distinguished by their elegant forms and slightly textured surfaces that have a tarnished or oxidised appearance. All of his works are rice husk paste or rice husk paste and ash paste on stoneware, and some have an additional layer of metal oxide, mineral pigments and/or silver slip.
Iguchi was awarded the Grand Prize at the 14th Paramita Ceramic Arts Exhibition in 2019, the Governor Award at the 54th East Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition in 2014 and a Special Award at the 7th Mashiko Ceramic Exhibition in 2008. His work is represented by important public collections, including the Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, the Paramita Museum in Komono, Japan and the Arkansas Art Center.
