Born in 1970, Gregor Törzs is a German photographer who lives and works in Berlin. After beginning his career in advertising, he moved to Los Angeles, where he learned filmmaking from Oscar-winning VFX experts John Dykstra and Doug Smith. He went on to work as a lighting technician, cinematographer and director, as well as appearing in film and television productions as an actor. Törzs later established himself as a Director of Photography in the advertising and fashion industries, working with international stars and prestigious brands. Since the early 2000s, however, he has dedicated himself exclusively to fine art photography and platinum printing.

Törzs’s practice is rooted in a sustained engagement with the natural world and with the hidden qualities of the subjects he photographs. Working primarily with analogue photography, he uses historic photographic and printing techniques. He crafts his platinum-palladium prints himself, tailoring each sheet to the individual negative, and has spent years researching and experimenting with different papers and processes. Japanese papers, including thin Gampi and handmade Kozo, give his photographs additional depth, texture and a tactile, sculptural presence. In 2024, he introduced his first colour underwater works.

His subjects range from coral reefs and underwater landscapes to butterfly and moth wings, larch trees, and fluorescent uranium glass. Törzs’s photographs focus on structures and details that often remain concealed, revealing qualities that emerge only upon closer inspection. His underwater photography is made entirely with natural light, using a large-format analogue camera that he designed and built over two years to achieve a particular sense of depth and dimensionality. Across his different series, Törzs describes his photographs as portraits.
