Roe Kyung Jo
b. 1951
Born in 1951, Roe Kyung Jo is a Korean ceramic artist renowned for his mastery of yeollimun, a traditional marbled-ware technique. He studied ceramic arts at Kyung Hee University in the 1970s and later continued his training at Kanazawa College of Art in 1979. Since 1976 he has participated in numerous group exhibitions and, beginning in 1979, has held several solo shows in Korea, Japan, and the United States. He is a professor in the Department of Ceramics at the College of Design at Kookmin University and received the Korea Crafts Council Award in 2005.
Roe’s work is held in many museum collections, including the Seoul Museum of Art, National Folk Museum of Korea, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., among others. Known for applying the historic yeollimun method to a broad range of wares, Roe’s pieces are characterized by swirling marbled patterns, muted colors, and subtly irregular forms that reflect the long and technically demanding tradition from which they descend.
