Munemaro Ishiguro

1893 - 1968

Celebrated for his deep understanding of historical ceramic traditions, Munemaro Ishiguro (1893-1968) remains widely recognised for his contributions to modern Japanese ceramics. Designated a Living National Treasure in 1955, he is admired for his mastery of iron-glaze techniques, informed by his study of ancient Chinese, Korean, and Japanese pottery.

Based in Kyoto, Ishiguro drew on his practices of calligraphy and ink painting in his approach to ceramic design, combining traditional influences with an expressive treatment of surface and form. Today, his ceramics are held in major museum collections, including the Tokyo National Museum and the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, Japan.
