Toko Shinoda

1913 - 2021

Toko Shinoda was born in Manchuria, China in 1913 and moved to Japan when she was two years old. A prominent Japanese artist celebrated for her unique fusion of traditional calligraphy with modern abstract art, she created sumi ink paintings and prints, and during the 1960s, turned her focus to lithography, which became her preferred medium.

Over the years, her work has been featured in major exhibitions around the world and is held in prominent collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
