Important American ceramic artist Betty Woodman has recently died. 

In 2006, Woodman was the first ceramic artist to be given the honour of having a retrospective exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, during her lifetime. Her work is featured in more than 50 public institutions and she exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world. 

In 2008, Galerie Besson held a solo exhibition of Woodman's work.  Images from this show are viewable on this page. A press release for that show may be viewed here. 

Betty Woodman was a pioneering ceramist, who blurred ideas between craft and art, painting and ceramics. She will be greatly missed. 

'Sad to hear of the passing of Betty Woodman. In 2008 I was working at Galerie Besson when Anita gave Betty a solo exhibition. For Anita Betty was one of her “Trois Grandes Dames”. Betty’s works took over the gallery in a way no other artist has - her art growing high up the walls of the gallery - in canvas and ceramic. Cardiff Museum, with the assistance of the Art Fund, acquired a major work from the exhibition. It was a magical exhibition and spending time with Betty and George was something to be treasured.'
